- 1. How To Boost Your Internet Speed
- 2. Adjust your browser settings Upgrading to the latest browser version, currently Internet Explorer 7, or use a different browser, such as Mozilla Firefox You could reduce the time it takes to download a page Always be careful when making any changes to the settings on your computer. © 2008 BroadbandChoices.co.uk
- 3. Talk to your provider If the speed is exceptionally slow, you might be able to boost your connection simply by asking your ISP if there’s anything they can do to speed things up If you’ve been on the same package for a long time, it’s probably outdated, so ask your provider if you can be upgraded if you agree to re-contract. © 2008 BroadbandChoices.co.uk
- 4. Tweak your router settings Most routers are like your car’s onboard computer and can be tweaked and adjusted to open up ports and increase speeds Read your router’s manual for details on how to improve performance. © 2008 BroadbandChoices.co.uk
- 5. Hate thy neighbour Make sure that you’re not sharing your wireless internet connection with other people on your street or in nearby flats Set up a WPA encryption if your hardware is compatible At the very least have a WEP password to stop unauthorised connections to your internet. © 2008 BroadbandChoices.co.uk
- 6. Reduce your bandwidth overhead There are a whole range of applications that will discretely use your internet connection. Most of these are set to automatically start up when you log into your computer Always opt to give permission before an application runs, or set things to run at more convenient times - like only downloading podcasts at night © 2008 BroadbandChoices.co.uk
- 7. Change your hardware BT Wholesale showed that changing from one standard ADSL modem to another can reduce speed 20% Faulty equipment can cause a drop in speed from 4Mb to only 470Kb BT Wholesale is advising the use of interstitial plates. These small boxes are easy to install and work to reduce electrical interference. © 2008 BroadbandChoices.co.uk
- 8. Get a better router If you’re using the router that you got free from your ISP, you could benefit from getting a higher range one that will give you a stronger signal if you’re connecting wirelessly You should also bear in mind that the less things blocking the signal of your router, such as doors and walls, the better. © 2008 BroadbandChoices.co.uk
- 9. Speed up your WiFi If you use wireless, you could replace the aerial. For around £10 you can buy an aerial of 9dBi, which can increase signal strength by 30-50%. You can also buy a wireless access point, which acts as a router, extending the reach of your wireless signal without reducing its strength. © 2008 BroadbandChoices.co.uk
- 10. Ditch your wireless If you’re having speed problems and are using a wireless router you should try connecting directly via a cable to see if it helps Even the type of cable that you use to connect can make a speed difference - connecting to your router via an Ethernet cable will be more efficient than using a USB cable. © 2008 BroadbandChoices.co.uk
- 11. Get closer to the faceplate The further your modem is from the faceplate (the socket your modem connects to), the weaker your broadband will be. Your modem should be as close to the broadband entry point in your home as possible. If you're on an ADSL connection up to 8Mb, moving your modem closer to the faceplate can increase your internet speed by up to 3Mb If your computer is on another floor or in a different room, you should invest in a good quality Ethernet cable to connect your wireless router or PC to the modem. © 2008 BroadbandChoices.co.uk
- 12. Monitor download programmes BBC iPlayer and Channel 4oD continue to run in the background of your PC even after you think you’ve turned them off They will not only slow you down - they’ll also use up your download allowance. Make sure you quit them fully when you close them With programmes like BBC's iPlayer, remember to check the settings. You'll want to make sure it is set to "no peer to peer.“ This way others on the network using iPlayer will not have access to yours. © 2008 BroadbandChoices.co.uk
- 13. Switch If you still find that your connection is slow, it might mean that your package just doesn’t support your needs Use the BroadbandChoices.co.uk comparison service to compare prices and to find a more suitable package. © 2008 BroadbandChoices.co.uk

Please Make Gmail Like Google Reader!
When the new design of Google Reader was launched, most of the people including me thought that they came out with the mix of Bloglines and GMail’s interface. The interface of Google Reader is now one of the best RSS reader interface; as I’ve experienced. However, now I think that Google must change the interface of Gmail as well and make it similar to Google Reader. The reason, why I think that it must be done is because of a following scenario :
Consider that you’ve sent an email to 10 people and 5 of them replied to that email and then you sent the email to again those same 10 people and again some of them replied back and then you replied back individually to those replies. Now, when you have more than 10-20 emails in a conversation, this scenario may appear where you may miss one or two messages which may be important in that conversation, but you’ll miss them because as soon as you click on the converstaion, it gets marked as read even though you’ve not read one or two replies of that conversation.
Now, what I believe that Google can make changes in the Gmail’s interface and make it like the new Google Reader’s interface. Where it marks those posts as read which you’ve read and as you scroll down, the posts gets marked as read and not when you click on the feed itself. So, conisdering the conversation as the feed and the messages in that as posts, Google can make these changes and provide a better user experience.
What do you think about this and if you think you’ve got some other idea then what are they ?

Proven SEO Tricks – Make Google to love your blog!
Now, that we have a blog and we know how to get the traffic to the blog using various ways but there is another source of traffic and that accounts to the most of the traffic you can ever get on your blogs and that is Search Engines and in that also, we can specifically talk about Google. Most of the bloggers will agree that their major portion of traffic comes from search engines (for some it goes up to 50 % too) and it will be foolish to let that traffic go away.
In this post we’ll talk about some Search Engine Optimization (SEO) (the practice which helps in bringing the posts to the top of the queries run on search engines) tricks, so that you can get the maximum traffic like others from various search engines.
Before we start I would like to drag your attention towards this post where, I got my blog indexed in just 1 day by Google using simple tricks. I’m sure you’ll find that useful too, if you don’t follow any of those tips, then do it right now and it will surely help. Now, lets look at other simple tips which will help you for sure :
1. Meta information : I know this accounts to nothing these days but still there is no harm in providing the information. It gives the search engine bots the idea of what exactly the blog or website is all about. Don’t try to game as there will be no use as search engines are too smart these days. This small little web tool will be able to help you in generating the Meta tags and will guide you on how you can add the Meta information in your blog or web pages.
2. Blog or website design : There is a major role of blog design in the search engine optimization. Well, what more I can say that Wendy from emoms at home has shared her own experience in a guest post @ problogger. So, don’t forget to make use of the themes which are Search engine optimized. If at all you go for a custom theme then you must ensure that the designer of theme works on the SEO points too.
3. Keyword stuffed posts : When I say Keyword stuffed by that I mean, just write normally as you do but don’t forget to include the keywords where you can. Don’t over do it otherwise that will trigger the alarm of the search engine bots. Also, highlight the keywords, for e.g. I’ve made “Search engine Optimization (SEO)” bold to ensure that it gets the importance and believe me search engine bots understand that you’ve made this text bold, so it is important. This thing is applicable in theme design as well, so if you have headline as H1 tag then it will get importance.
4. Keyword stuffed Titles and URLs : Keywords are important for SEO and bots pay importance to the URLs and Titles of the posts. So, if you are using WordPress then you may use All in one SEO plug-in. If you are using WordPress then you can always use Post-Slug option and have relevant keywords in the URL.
5. Read lots of SEO blogs : There are many blogs who provide you some valuable SEO tricks. Don’t forget to read these blogs, here’s the list of some good SEO blogs :
1. Matt Cutts
2. SEO blackhat
3. SEO Moz

The Google Penguin Update Solution; I Lost All My Ranks and Traffic. Help!
Last Wednesday, I presented at SMX Toronto at the “Big Google Kitchen Sink Panel”. My presentation outlined how to build a Panda-proof content strategy, authority optimization, as well as Google’s top 10 do’s and don’ts for content. In addition, I presented a Panda reversal case study, the emerging importance of MicroData and backlinking strategies involving the social media.
Google has since released yet another update, dubbed the Penguin update, proof that Google is increasing the pace of change as they seek, what they believe to be, better search results. Maybe one day they’ll run out of cute animals to push these unnerving updates… Nonetheless, a thorough strategy is needed to deal with Google’s increasingly frequent algorithm changes and potential loss of rankings as a result of these updates.
The good news is that Google still cares about providing a customer service feedback loop for those who feel they have been wronged by Happy Feet’s evil twin. Google’s Matt Cutts recently tweeted that they have launched a form to submit to Google if you believe your website should not have been penalized by the Penguin update. You’re also able to report websites you believe to be spam to Google. There’s no reason, however, to feel upset if you have a competitor or two that you think will report you purely out of spite. Google should have effective means to deal with false reporting. You should only be concerned if you have any reason to think that many different users would report your site as spam.
However, my presentation is equally applicable to the Penguin update, and I suspect future updates as well. You can adapt and thrive in the constantly changing Google dance from veterans who have lived to share their stories of defeat and conquer.
Let’s recap the presentation and you will see why.
Power Articles – They Work!
What exactly is a Power Article?
Power Articles are well researched, high quality and in-depth articles of 1000-2000+ words. In fact, they should be so well written that you can easily differentiate it from other content online. How often should they be posted? Ideally, you want to aim for 2-10 articles per week based on how aggressive you need to be
How effective are they against Panda and Penguin?
If you consistently write Power Articles, over time, you’ll notice your traffic increasing significantly. Why? Simple. The key is to practice what Google preaches. Implement great content for the user, and only for the user. Also remember to conduct topic research and competitive research using available tools. (WordTracker, Spyfu, SEOMOZ) Not only will Power Articles build naturally occurring backlinks but they will also be much better received amongst the social media community as well as promote author authority.
What if I don’t have the time or the resources?
We understand that writing Power Articles can be a time consuming task. Alternatively, you can simply update existing content on your site. It’s a wise idea to upgrade high traffic and high converting content into Power Articles. We recommend creating an update schedule for your top 100 content pages every 45 days. Dynamic sitemaps are essential at this point as well as the freshness and relevance of your content. Great content will always get attention, especially when updated.
Authority Optimization
Try not to obsess over algorithm changes but do not ignore it either. Stay on top of the search industry by constantly reviewing the following sources.
What did Optimum7 do to combat Panda and how can this be applied to Penguin?
Do’s
Attention to technical detail is a must.

Authority Optimization
- What is authority?
- Rel=“author” and Google+ affect authority
- Google knows who everyone is through social connections.
- Author Authority is transferable across domains.
- This has great implications for guest blogging, PR outreach and more.
- You have to “Be Somebody” online across different platforms.
- Review “Site Content” on Google Analytics
- Export all data for the past 90 days
- Identify all pages with poor stats (visits, bounce rate, time on site)
- De-index them from search (robots.txt, no-index, no-follow or 301 redirects)
- De-emphasize by removing from the dynamic sitemap file submitted to Webmaster Tools. We call this Dynamic Sitemap Sculpting.
- Create a schedule to re-write content as Power Articles and add to sitemap / index as you refresh content.
- WordPress makes all these processes a breeze. Other platforms might need custom coding.
Try not to obsess over algorithm changes but do not ignore it either. Stay on top of the search industry by constantly reviewing the following sources.

Effective SEO Tricks
While the word “tricks” is often applied to SEO techniques or processes, the word “trick” to describe how SEO is implemented is a bit misleading. Using a term like “tricks” implies that there is some kind of secret way to duck the accepted methods, and yet acquire the same result – or even better. This is the kind of thinking that black hat SEO uses, which you certainly do not want to get caught up in.
There are no magic tricks to SEO; it is a sophisticated, sometime complex and ongoing process, using a combination of many techniques and strategies, both on-site and off-site. Below, you’ll find an overview of general SEO tips, techniques and must-haves, as well as the kinds of things that have a negative impact on SEO and your website’s ranking in SERPs (search engine result page).
General SEO Rules of Thumb
1. Own a fantastic website within your area of expertise, industry or service. What makes a website great? This is highly subjective, and it obviously changes from industry to industry and niche to niche… If you have a simple business service, you probably will not want a website that looks like an online casino game room. A business or business service website should have a professional, sleek and streamlined user interface, while offering as much transparency about your business as possible. Transparency helps to build trust before your site visitors even make any effort to contact you.
2. Be committed and patient. SEO is not a one or two week process; there is no instant gratification. Rewards come from consistent, persistent SEO practices over the long-term, and the visibility of your website attained through SEO and SEM can become a lasting achievement through continued use of those practices
3. Choose your SEO Company or services carefully. Ask a lot of questions – demand a strategic plan, ask about estimates for long-term services, discuss a link-building strategy, web analytics, PPC management and any other pertinent details. The more information you draw out of an SEO service, the more insight you’ll have into whether they are the right company for you. Be wary of any SEO service that guarantees first-page rankings.
4. Perform website analytics, so you have at least a loose blueprint for an SEO strategy and something to point to when you first discuss SEO with a professional SEM/SEO company. In order to understand the basics of your analytics report, you should familiarize yourself with its components and how it relates to SEO. In other words, it is a wise idea to become an SEO student. Obviously you will not be able to learn in-depth SEO practices and techniques in a short time, but familiarizing yourself with the basics, as well as your website analytics will significantly contribute to your decisions about SEO services.
The Most Important SEO Hints and Elements
Unique, Fresh, Relevant Content
The content development of your website has always been extremely important. However, within the past year, the importance of website content has exponentially increased, in terms of search engine ranking. The quality of content used to be secondary to the traffic and amount of links to a site. That might not be the case anymore. Google now requires content to be not only relevant, but of high quality and useful to the reader, both in form and information. This means that poorly written, incorrect or shallow content can actually harm your SERP rankings. If you find that you do not have the time to provide your website with updated, unique and useful content on a regular basis, it is a good idea to hire or outsource quality web content writers to provide you with articles, blogs and other content that will add value to your site, both for the search engines and for your audience. Aside from the recently updated search engine algorithms which have fine-tuned their crawlers to differentiate between good and bad content, websites that have consistent valuable content have a much better chance of acquiring incoming links from quality sites; this is invaluable in terms of SEO and SERP ranking. It cannot be stressed enough how important it is to ensure your content is not only relevant, useful and unique, but that it is also well written and accurate.
Meta Tag Tricks; Page Titles
At earlier stages of internet development, page titles had an extremely high impact upon search engine crawlers. While this is not the case anymore, page titles are still an important part of on-site SEO, as they signify to search engine crawlers what that particular web page’s content is centered around. For this reason, it is not a good idea to simply title your pages with the name of your business, logo or even your business motto. Page titles should all be unique, focusing upon the key words or elements of that particular page. If an auto loan business was creating their company services page, a good page title would be “auto loan company services.” The same applies for each page of content within the website, as well as blog posts. A blog about how to get lower auto loan interest rates should have a page title that reflects exactly that. Remember, the page title is not the same thing as the article or blog title – the page title shows up in the very top left side of the screen, above the browser, or sometimes on the window tab. Page titles are assigned on the html side, or typically through the content management system.
XML Sitemaps
Sitemaps are imperative in improving the visibility and index of your web pages. Sitemaps not only provide a list of links to all pages on your website, which helps search engine crawlers index your pages, but also provides a mapped hierarchy of those pages, which tells search engines which pages are most important. However, sitemaps do have a limit as to how many links or pages can be on them, so if you have a very large site, you should have several sitemaps, with no more than 10,000 links at the absolute maximum, per sitemap. Having several sitemaps for a large site will not hurt your search engine ranking compared to smaller sites with only one sitemap. As a matter of fact, having several, highly organized sitemaps can actually improve your ranking.
Multiple sitemaps do not have to be strictly for large sites – they can be arranged for smaller sites as well, since you should be adding unique content regularly, and thereby increasing the size of your site. The earlier you designate what links and pages go to which sitemaps, the better. The key to multiple sitemaps is to arrange them according to how your site is structured, how deeply your pages go and their sections. While you may not understand all the details, this is an example of something to discuss with your SEO provider.
Meta-Data: Meta Tags, Descriptions
Meta-Data is the data filled in on the html side of each web page and should be made as simple as possible by your content management system. Meta tags are the key words or phrases of each page’s content, and ideally, should be consistent with words or phrases in the page title, and most certainly within the actual content. If you have web content that discusses preparing flower gardens and flower beds for winter, then use those three primary keywords as the page meta tags, in the page title, and in the meta description. The meta description is the snippet that describes your content in a brief sentence or two. While Google no longer uses meta descriptions as the text that appears under a link in search results, many other search engines still do. In addition, when you have a PPC ad, you have control over your meta description and what shows up under your ad, so you’ll want to make sure you know how to optimize those descriptions for both search engines and your target audience. The more uniform and consistent your meta-data, content keywords, and page titles are throughout your entire site, the better it will perform in search results.
SEO-friendly URLs
URLs are created in several ways, depending upon the settings in your content management system, and which CMS you use. Some CMS generated URLs are not SEO friendly, so stay aware of how your settings generate URLs, and make changes if necessary. Using the example above for flower garden and flower bed preparation for winter, a good URL example would be: www.GardenExample.com/preparing-flower-gardens-and-beds-for-winter.php. A bad URL example, the kind that is often auto-generated by a CMS system, is www.GardenExample.com/flower?=4888bed+hggg#%_5552.php. Having SEO-friendly URLs not only helps search engines find your pages more easily, but they are also much more “guessable” for users who are searching for this information.
Use Relevant Anchors for All Links
One very common mistake that people make is to either simply list the URL, or to anchor it with “go <u>here. </u>“; this is a mistake whether it for internal links, outbound links or incoming links (which you may not have a lot control over), by anchoring links with terms, words or phrases that are relevant to both the current page and the linked page. For example, if a blog is written about the top ski resorts in North America, and has links to various ski resort websites, instead of listing all their URLs, a good anchoring method might be “favorite ski resort Aspen” or “top ski resort in N.Cali” and so on. This improves your website’s relevance to your targeted key terms or phrases in a search query, in addition to the Google ranked website quality that improves for each quality link itself. From a user’s perspective, links with anchor text provide a more fluid, uninterrupted reading experience: the visitor will have a much better idea about which links they want to click when they are anchored with relevant keywords.
An SEO-friendly CMS
Some content management systems are much more conducive to SEO than others. WordPress is a great example of a highly SEO friendly CMS, not to mention its extreme user-friendliness. Drupal and Joomla can handle much more customized, larger e-commerce sites with in-depth custom developments and dynamics, but
do not necessarily have default settings that produce SEO-friendly URLs and other elements that make it easy for search engines to find, crawl and index content pages. Be sure that if you use a heavier CMS like Drupal, that you install SEO add-ons or other applications that create search engine optimized URLs and meta-data.
What NOT to Do for SEO
While the above elements are all important for SEO implementation, there are common mistakes made that can work against SEO efforts, and consequently your website SERP ranking.
1. Do not accept or exchange links without some discretion, just to get incoming links. It is a common “trick” for many younger websites with low visibility to engage in “link exchanges,” especially from content farms. This is a bad idea, and can work against SEO, because the quality and relevance of all incoming links are considered as search engines crawl and index your pages for a particular search query. For instance, if you have a retail website for gloves and hats, and your incoming links are primarily from content farms that focus on internet and technology articles, Google crawlers will recognize this, and your SERP ranking will reflect the irrelevance of the links. However, if the glove and hat retail website has incoming links from high quality retail winter wear sites, or even a uniform wear site – this will help SERP rankings.
2. Article or content re-writes, otherwise known as article “spinning” – This is an extremely common, but very bad practice by many, many website owners. Those that use spun content to submit to as many directories as possible, or simply use it on their websites to create extra content without a lot of effort – are in for severe disappointment. Spun articles are not considered unique content by search engines, and using spun articles as either content, or as incoming links from directories or other sites, causes SERP rankings to drop.
3. Keyword Density – Many website owners continue to believe – and so place emphasis upon strict keyword percentages within a given set of content. Pay attention here: adhering to any type of keyword density percentage is a useless practice for enhancing or improving SEO. Keywords naturally written into the content, with the user or visitor in mind, will have the best possible results.
Several other common mistakes are widely practiced and thought to be SEO improvements. This is precisely why it’s important to become a student of SEO, in order to learn the true elements and proper practices of search engine optimization for your website. Even more importantly, by understanding effective SEO, you’ll be able to choose your professional SEO provider with better judgment, and really optimize your website for the best possible results.
Delhi in a must win situation against the dangerous Chennai
I mentioned in my last column that Chennai Super Kings have the knack of performing better under pressure and that's what they did against Mumbai Indians in Bangalore. Mumbai in general had chased very well throughout the tournament but in a knock out situation like this, where the pressure is more I think it would have been better had Mumbai batted first. They could have posted a decent score and attacked with their bowling led by Lasith Malinga.
It was an extraordinary effort by Chennai to get to 187 after being two for one at one stage. Skipper M S Dhoni often saves his best for the big matches, and Wednesday was one such occasion. He is a different player when he looks to go for the shots and he played an amazing knock.
DD vs CSK preview: Delhi hoping to come hard at Chennai
The six that he hit over deep mid-wicket to Malinga in the second last over was just extraordinary and if that was not enough, the six over extra cover by Dwayne Bravo a couple of balls later was simply bizarre. It was a delightful batting display by Dhoni and Bravo, and not to forget the contribution early from the ever dependable Mike Hussey and S Badrinath.
Mumbai had the batting to chase the total, but in such pressure games it's not easy and Chennai kept striking regularly. Bravo's spell was pretty crucial and he mixed things wonderfully and except for Dwayne Smith, no other Mumbai batsmen really threatened to take the game away.
Chennai will now face the Delhi Daredevils in their own den at Chepauk. Delhi made a few mistakes against Kolkata Knight Riders on Tuesday. In conditions better suited for spin bowling, they went for a predominant pace attack, maybe that’s because they have been a good batting unit and they trust their batting enough to chase down any score, but if that was the case, it was quite baffling to see Ross Taylor coming so down in the order, almost in a no win situation.
Delhi lost the opportunity to secure a berth in the final in what could have been their maiden IPL final appearance and now find themselves in a must win situation against the dangerous Chennai, who had an easy victory over Delhi when the two last met in same venue.
Chennai would have the edge considering it's a home game and they adapt to pressure well and would look to make their fourth appearance in the final. But Delhi have played good cricket throughout the tournament and the likes of Virender Sehwag, David Warner and Taylor can change the game on their own. So we have another good match on our hands.

IPL eliminator: Clash between the North and the South
Once again the uncertain nature of the T20 format came to the fore when Mumbai Indians were defeated by a big margin by the Chennai Superkings in the eliminator. The Chennai team had lost both their earlier encounters to the Mumbai team but when it came to the game that mattered they raised the level of their game and beat the much fancied Mumbai team. They will now take on the team that finished top of the points table Delhi for the right to play the Kolkatta Knightriders in the finals on Sunday.
In the T20 format chances are to be taken and many a gamble has turned out trumps for the team but there has also to be a cricketing thinking behind those gambles. That thinking has not been seen with most teams this season and so some moves have flopped miserably.
There is little room for tactics in the game since it is a slam bang format but it is here that a good captain will use his bowling resources well. He will know when to bring his best bowlers on and when to risk another over from a lesser bowler. Gautam Gambhir has got this right more times than others and that is why his team is in the finals on Sunday.
Sehwag on the other hand missed a trick or two. To give the last over of the Kolkatta innings to Varun Aaron who has just come out of injury was an unnecessary risk and it didn’t work as Aaron was taken for 21 runs. Captains usually have their best bowler bowling the last over of the innings when they are fielding first and the penultimate over of the innings when they are defending a total.

Sekar backs Delhi batsmen to come good vs CSK
Sehwag on the other hand missed a trick or two. To give the last over of the Kolkatta innings to Varun Aaron who has just come out of injury was an unnecessary risk and it didn’t work as Aaron was taken for 21 runs. Captains usually have their best bowler bowling the last over of the innings when they are fielding first and the penultimate over of the innings when they are defending a total.
The idea is quite simple. If the opposition has wickets in hand they will go hell for leather in the final overs and it is here that the best bowler will be able to stop them. While defending if there are 20 runs needed then it will be better for the best bowler to bowl the penultimate over and give away say six runs and that will make it easier for the lesser bolwer to defend 14 runs. On the other hand a lesser bowler may concede 16 runs in the penultimate over and that leaves no pressure on the batsmen to get the runs needed off the best bowler in the team.
Sehwag also went in with four seam bowlers and that too on Indian pitches where it is easier to use the extra pace to score off than against spinners. Gambhir got it right by picking three spinners plus Yusuf Pathan’s off spin and with the canny Rajat Bhatia slowing it down it was tough for the batsmen looking for the pace off the pitch to go for the big shots.
Dhoni too has got Ashwin and Jakati to bowl spin. Ashwin has been particularly impressive because he has not been afraid to flight the ball and tempt the batsmen into going for the sixer. By flighting the ball he also takes the pace off it and slows it and is thus more effective.
Chennai though have to use Albie Morkel’s batting. He didn’t get to bat in the eliminator and was luckily not needed as Dhoni and Bravo did the bit but he can, not just destroy the bowling but can demoralise the opposition in doing so. Delhi too have Sehwag and Warner who can dish out the same treatment so if all goes well there could be sixes galore in the clash between the North and the South.

The Google News Search Box
The Google News homepage uses a special search box with a few interesting features. Google only shows a list of suggestions and doesn't use Google Instant, even if this feature is available for the Google News results pages. The last suggestion lets you search the web and you can use the up arrow key to select it or just press Shift+Enter. A similar feature is available in Gmail, but you can't use the Shift+Enter shortcut.
When Google redesigned Google News and other services, the "Web Search" button seemed extraneous and it was removed.

Google Maps Mobile Users Send Traffic Data
If you use the mobile Google Maps application on a phone that has GPS, you're sending Google real-time traffic information. "When you choose to enable Google Maps with My Location, your phone sends anonymous bits of data back to Google describing how fast you're moving. When we combine your speed with the speed of other phones on the road, across thousands of phones moving around a city at any given time, we can get a pretty good picture of live traffic conditions," explains Google.
It's an interesting way to use GPS information on a grand scale to solve practical problems. Many other Google services collect data that help Google develop new features: GOOG-411 collects voice samples that train Google's speech recognition systems, Google queries anticipate flu activity, while query refinements improve Google's "did you mean" feature.
Google Mobile's privacy policy includes a long list of information that could be collected by some of Google's services: your phone number, your carrier, basic usage stats about your device, your location, voice samples. It's worth pointing out that iPhone's mapping application "does not support traffic crowdsourcing", so you won't improve Google's traffic data by using it (iPhone's map application is not developed by Google).
Apparently, this new source of data allowed Google to expand the traffic feature to arterial roads. "Commuters have long relied on traffic sites to help them determine their last-minute path around poor traffic on the highway. But if the traffic looks bad on the highways, you'll probably want to know how it looks on the alternate routes through arterials," explains Google LatLong.

For now, Google Maps provides live traffic data for a small number of countries (US, UK, France, China), but crowdsourcing could expand its availability.

Google chrome operating system
On the other hand there was the Mac OS, which was costlier.Linux was there trying to get hold of the OS market, and during that time google decided to come up with its own OS.
The chrome OS is planned to be an open source OS with fast access to the web. However it’s been a few years since this was first announced and the launch date for the retail hardware has been dated to be around mid-2011.
The OS uses C and C++ as its coding languages and it is Linux based. Its main features would be to be fast and simple as well as work exclusively with web applications.

GooGle Latest Tricks
Looking for the ultimate tips for Google searching? You've just found the only guide to Google you need. Let's get started:
1. The best way to begin searching harder with Google is by clicking the Advanced Search link.
2. This lets you search for exact phrases, "all these words", or one of the specified keywords by entering search terms into the appropriate box.
3. You can also define how many results you want on the page, what language and what file type you're looking for, all with menus.
4. Advanced Search lets you type in a Top Level Domain (like .co.uk) in the "Search within site of domain" box to restrict results.
5. And you can click the "Date, usage rights, numeric range and more" link to access more advanced features.
6. Save time – most of these advanced features are also available in Google's front page search box, as command line parameters.
7. Google's main search invisibly combines search terms with the Boolean construct "AND". When you enter smoke fire – it looks for smoke AND fire.
8. To make Google search for smoke or fire, just type smoke OR fire
9. Instead of OR you can type the | symbol, like this: smoke | fire
10. Boolean connectors like AND and OR are case sensitive. They must be upper case.
11. Search for a specific term, then one keyword OR another by grouping them with parentheses, like this: water (smoke OR fire)
12. To look for phrases, put them in quotes: "there's no smoke without fire"
13. Synonym search looks for words that mean similar things. Use the tilde symbol before your keyword, like this: eggplant
14. Exclude specific key words with the minus operator. new pram -ebay excludes all results from eBay.
15. Common words, like I, and, then and if are ignored by Google. These are called "stop words".
16. The plus operator makes sure stop words are included. Like: fish +and chips
17. If a stop word is included in a phrase between quote marks as a phrase, the word is searched for.
18. You can also ask Google to fill in a blank. Try: Christopher Columbus discovered *
19. Search for a numerical range using the numrange operator. For example, search for Sony TV between £300 and £500 with the string Sony TV £300..£500
20. Google recognises 13 main file types through advanced search, including all Microsoft Office Document types, Lotus, PostScript, Shockwave Flash and plain text files.
21. Search for any filetype directly using the modifier filetype:[filetype extension]. For example: soccer filetype:pdf
22. Exclude entire file types, using the same Boolean syntax we used to exclude key words earlier: rugby -filetype:doc
23, In fact, you can combine any Boolean search operators, as long as your syntax is correct. An example: "sausage and mash" -onions filetype:doc
24. Google has some very powerful, hidden search parameters, too. For example "intitle" only searches page titles. Try intitle:herbs
25. If you're looking for files rather than pages – give index of as the intitle: parameter. It helps you find web and FTP directories.
26. The modifier inurl only searches the web address of a page: give inurl:spices a go.
27. Find live webcams by searching for: inurl:view/view.shtml
28. The modifier inanchor is very specific, only finding results in text used in page links.
29. Want to know how many links there are to a site? Try link:sitename – for example link:www.mozilla.org
30. Similarly, you can find pages that Google thinks are related in content, using the related: modifier. Use it like this: related:www.microsoft.com
31. The modifier info:site_name returns information about the specified page.
32. Alternatively, do a normal search then click the "Similar Pages" link next to a result.
33. Specify a site to search with the site: modifier – like this: search tips site:www.techradar.com

Adsense Basics
Google Adsense- What is it?
Google Adsense is a contextual program that gives webmasters the chance to earn some money from their websites. Webmasters can place Google Adsense ads on their web pages. The ads that are shown on the site are from the Google Adwords network, where Advertisers buy space on websites and pay per click through to their own websites. Every time an Adsense ad is clicked by a visitor to your site you get paid a share of the revenue that Google makes from charging the Advertiser to place Adsense ads on other websites. Below is a very simple guide on how to get started with “Google Adsense”
Sign up to Adsense here and it is now time to make an ad code and place it on your website to earn money.
Creating Your Own Adsense Code:
You need to login into your Adsense account and then once inside choose Adsense set-up. You then need to choose the ad-format. Many Adsense Publishers have had great success using the 336×280 Large Rectangular Square ad. Then once you have picked the Ad Format, you need to change the colours and make the ads fit the style of your website. Once you have done these steps you can add a channel that will track all the ads on your site and tell you which ads are performing better.
Your code should look like the one below:
<script type=”text/javascript”><!–
google_ad_client = “Publisher ID Here“;
google_ad_width =Width of the ad;
google_ad_height = Height of the ad;
google_ad_format = “chosen ad format“;
google_ad_type = “Text, Image or Text and Image“;
google_ad_channel = “The Name you have called the ad, to track stats“;
google_color_border = “chosen border color“;
google_color_bg = “chosen background color“;
google_color_link = “chosen link color“;
google_color_url = “chosen url color“;
google_color_text = “chosen text color“;
//–>
</script>
<script type=”text/javascript”
src=”http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js”>
</script> You need to copy the code into your website.
Once you have chosen your ad formats and are sure they will fit in well with your template you need to add the code to your files on your server. Once you have done this the Adsense ads will appear on your site in the places you intended them to be placed.

This will help you in earning more money with Adsense as visitors are more likely to click on ads that are similar to the topic of your pages content.
